Zero Excess Car Hire Explained

Zero excess car hire means that if the vehicle is damaged or stolen during your rental, you have no personal financial liability. Here is what it means in practice, what is covered, and why it is the recommended way to hire a car in Spain.

What is an excess?

When you hire a car, the rental agreement includes a level of insurance as standard. This insurance covers damage and theft — but with a limit on your personal liability known as the excess. If you have an excess of 1000€ and the car is scratched, you are personally responsible for the first 1000€ of the repair cost, even if the standard insurance covers the rest.

Excess amounts in Spain are high compared to other European countries. Standard rates at major suppliers typically carry excesses of between 1000€ and 2000€, depending on the car category.

What does zero excess mean?

Zero excess means your personal liability for damage or theft is reduced to zero. If something happens to the car, the insurance covers the full cost — you pay nothing.

This is different from having no insurance at all. Zero excess means you have the maximum level of insurance, not the minimum.

Zero excess vs a standard rate with top-up insurance

At the rental desk, staff at many suppliers will offer to sell you additional insurance to reduce or eliminate your excess. This counter insurance — sometimes called Super CDW, Super Cover, or Full Protection — can cost 15€ to 30 per day on top of the rate you already paid online. On a two-week hire, that is an extra €200 to €400.

A zero excess rate purchased before you travel includes this cover in the price from the outset. You do not negotiate at the desk, you are not upsold, and there are no surprises. The price you see when booking is the price you pay.

What does zero excess cover?

A zero excess, all-inclusive rate on spain‑car‑rental.com typically includes:

  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) — covers damage to the hire car body
  • Theft Protection (TP) — covers theft of the vehicle
  • Third Party Liability — covers damage to other vehicles or property
  • Tyres and windscreen — covers damage to tyres and glass (included at most suppliers)
  • Roof and undercarriage — included at most suppliers
  • Roadside assistance — included at most suppliers

Exclusions are rare but may include accessories such as child seats or GPS devices, and in some cases, damage caused by gross negligence. Read your hire agreement for the precise terms.

Zero excess and the deposit

When you hire a car without zero excess, the supplier holds a security deposit on your card at collection — typically the full excess amount. This is so they can cover their costs if the car comes back damaged.

With a zero excess rate, there is no financial exposure for the supplier, so no deposit is held. This is an important benefit for debit card users in particular, as a large deposit withheld from a current account can significantly affect your holiday budget.

Does zero excess mean I can drive carelessly?

No. Your zero excess cover is still subject to the standard terms of the hire agreement. Damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, deliberate damage, or use of the vehicle outside the agreed territory will not be covered. Zero excess reduces your liability for accidents and everyday incidents — it is not a licence to ignore the vehicle.
